Sea Sick

Guess who got sea sick on the boat this morning?

Me.

Sick Girl

And Ryan.

Sick Boy

Apparently we are a match made in motion-sickness heaven.

The morning started out well enough with a hearty breakfast of steel cut oats with fresh blueberries and a scoop of peanut butter.

Breakfast

Unfortunately after heading out on the boat, my stomach took a turn for the worse.

Once we arrived at the bouy indicating we’d reached our first scuba diving location, the boat got a-rockin’ and serious nausea set in for me.

Ryan, my dad and our friend Steve got into the water right away and headed down to explore a sunken ship. My sister, mom and I stayed at the surface because they were going to depth that was a little too deep for us.

Once Ryan arrived back at the surface, he joined me in the sea sick club. Nausea hit him like a ton of bricks and he puked over the side of the boat. Shortly after I was hurling too. 😦

As we headed out to the next dive location, I felt determined to at least get one decent dive in. I suited up, puking in between putting on my wet suit and fins. It was highly unattractive.

I felt confident that once I got under water where the waves couldn’t get to me, I’d feel much better.

Boy was I right!!!

One hundred feet under the water felt like heaven. My nausea dissipated and I got to explore an amazingly beautiful ship that the Coast Guard sunk to create a wonderful dive site. The fish were gorgeous and we even saw a barracuda (yikes!). I only wish I could have stayed under water for hours!

Sadly the minute I boarded the boat, nausea set in again. After puking yet again, we decided my stomach and Ryan’s stomach couldn’t handle a whole day of rockin’ on the boat.

We were dropped off at the condo and after about 10 minutes on land I felt 90 percent better. Ryan is still a little worse for wear, but we’re getting some food and water into his belly and I hope he improves soon. Poor boy. 😦

All of the pictures from our day on the boat are on my mom’s camera, so I’ll be sure to post them later. She said she got a picture of me and Ryan when we were lookin’ like death, so I’m sure that will amuse you guys. 😉

Lunch

When we arrived back at our room, I made myself a big lunch of manicotti, grapes and peanut butter M&Ms.

Lunch

I refilled this plate for seconds. My belly needed food!

I’m blogging from a little cafe outside our room and it is truly gorgeous here. The water is perfectly turquoise. I’m trying not to be too upset that our day of scuba diving was cut short, but it’s really, really hard. I have been looking forward to a day of diving for months now and feel pretty bummed that I was only able to experience one dive (though it was a great one).

Next time I will be sure to take sea-sick medication the night before and the morning of a dive. Lesson learned!

Please make me feel like I’m not alone… Have you ever gotten sick before or during an event you were really looking forward to?

It Came!!!

Last night my big purchase arrived!

It's Here!!!

I’ve been tracking the progress of my new Nikon D3000 digital SLR camera through Amazon.com every day, and it wasn’t supposed to arrive until tomorrow, but *HOORAY* it arrived early. I couldn’t use it last night ( 😦 ! ) because I needed to charge the battery, but you better believe it was put to use first thing this morning!

I bet you can guess who I chose as my first victim…

My Little Love Machine

I’m so happy to finally have a camera that can take indoor pictures that aren’t fuzzy and don’t require a flash that make Sadie’s eyes reflect so she looks like some possessed devil dog.

I already have plans to take Sadie to the dog park tonight to take pictures of her in action and really see what this camera is made of!

Cocoa Oats

Of course I used my new little toy to snap pictures of my breakfast. While I showered, I let a small batch of steel cut oats simmer on the stove.

Oats

I wanted something chocolatey for breakfast (don’t I always?), so I added a tablespoon of cocoa powder and half of a scoop of All the Whey chocolate peanut butter cup protein powder to the oats and stirred ’em up.

Cocoa Oats

Brownie Batter?

This mix was oh-so-chocolatey. If I wasn’t a brownie batter connoisseur you might be able to convince me that this mixture was some odd form of brownie batter. Okay, maybe not, but it really was delicious!

This was a great post-workout breakfast. I did the same 50 minute treadmill workout that I did on Tuesday and it got my heart thumpin’ and my body dripping sweat. One reader asked the distance logged and calories burned for this workout and so I made sure to take note today. I did about 4.45 miles in 50 minutes (including the 5 minute cool-down which I did at a 3.8 pace on a 6.0 incline) and I burned just shy of 570 calories.

When I got home from the gym Ryan commented on my red face. I definitely sweat more and burned more calories doing this workout with varying speeds/intensities than I do when I run five miles. It’s nice to incorporate some incline walking and some faster running to fight boredom and work your heart in a different way… the extra calories burned it just icing on the cake. (Oooh… cake…)

Oh, hey, did you know there’s only one more day until Friday? Something to make you smile, I hope. 😀

Fibrous Scrabble

After dinner last night Ryan and I decided to play Scrabble in front of the fire. Ryan let me start the game and my first word was quite blog-appropriate: fiber! Do I make you guys proud? 😉

Well, my blog-inspired word was likely the death of me in this particular game, as Ryan tacked on an “ous” to the end of the word and got mega-points!

Scrabbletastic!

(As I posted this picture, I realized “fibrous” is actually spelled incorrectly on our board… there’s no “e” in fibrous! Ryan, I want a re-match!)

We were actually quite proud of ourselves for filling up the entire board and playing until there was only one letter remaining! We made a concerted effort to play up or to the side so the game could actually continue.

Ryan was our score keeper (I hate math) and used the nifty vizsla notepad I got in my Christmas stocking to keep score.

Score Board

(I know, we’re obsessed with our dog…)

Whenever we play any games, Ryan is always the score keeper. He’s my number cruncher! Whenever I’m cooking or baking in the kitchen and need to condense a recipe, he’s my go-to guy for figuring out how to divide the recipe in thirds or quarters. 😉

Are you a number cruncher or a wordy one?

I’m definitely a wordy girl… I leave all the math and number fun to my financial fiance.

Workout and Breakfast

I had my first good cardio workout of the year today! Though I’ve hit the gym for cardio several times since the start of 2010, I haven’t really left feeling like I really challenged myself too much or got my heart pumpin’ too hard until today.

I did a 50 minute treadmill workout that looked like this:

  • Walk at 4.0 at 7.5 incline for 4 minutes
  • Jog at 6.5 at 1.0 incline for 5 minutes
  • Walk at 4.0 at 7.5 incline for 4 minutes
  • Jog at 6.5 at 1.0 incline for 5 minutes
  • Jog at 6.5 at 2.0 incline for 3 minutes
  • Run at 7.0 at 1.0 incline for 3 minutes
  • Run hard at 8.0 at 1.0 include for 1 minute
  • Jog at 6.0 at 1.0 incline for 1 minute
  • Run hard at 8.0 at 1.0 incline for 1 minute
  • Run at 7.0 at 1.0 incline for 1 minute
  • Jog at 6.5 at 1.0 incline for 3 minutes
  • Walk at 4.0 at 7.5 incline for 4 minutes
  • Jog at 6.5 at 1.0 incline for 5 minutes
  • Walk at 4.0 at 7.5 incline for 5 minutes
  • Walk (cool down) for 5 minutes

I left nice ‘n’ sweaty and ready for a yummy breakfast.

While I showered I cooked up a batch of steel cut oats because a hot breakfast sounded perfect on this chilly morning.

Steel Cut Oats

I really do like steel cut oats better than plain old fashioned oats because I feel like they are creamier and nuttier, though I usually gravitate toward the old fashioned variety because they cook up nice and fast!

The big bowl of steel cut oats was quite a nice treat today!

Oats

I stirred in half a scoop of All the Whey cupcake batter protein powder and a sliced apple to round out my oatty bowl.

Tuesday's Breakfast

Oats 'n' Apple

I burned my throat a bit gulping down Barnie’s Santa’s White Christmas coffee (free from the gym!). Easy does it!

Happy Tuesday, wonderful readers!
