Sandwiches Don’t Need Meat. Who Knew?

Growing up I used to think that a sandwich had to include meat. (Unless, of course, it met one of two exceptions: It was a peanut butter and jelly or grilled cheese sandwich.)

Today I often make meat-free sandwiches, letting nut butter, cheese or hummus do the talking.

If cheese and meat got into a flavor fight in my mouth, cheese would win every time. I love the strong, creamy taste of a good slice of cheese.

My lunch today featured a smoked Provolone cheese and tomato sandwich, made on a toasted Toufayan everything flavored Smart Bagel.

Tomato + Provolone Bagelwich

Cheese, you are delicious.

On the side of my tomato and cheese bagelwich, I enjoyed cucumber slices and a crisp apple for some sweetness.

Aaand, a little slice of birthday cake may have made it into my mouth as well.

This cake was leftover from a coworker’s birthday yesterday (I pretended it was for my blog’s birthday).

I enjoyed it so much the first time around that I just had to experience its deliciousness again today.

Growing up, marble cake was always my birthday cake of choice! πŸ˜€

  1. Cheese!!

I can do sandwiches with no meat, though they make my husband spastic. πŸ™‚

  2. Veggie sandwiches and wraps are always a good choice…especially with hummus! Mmmmm…that cake looks so good. I always had a cookie cake for my birthday as a kid. πŸ™‚

  3. nut butter sandwiches!

  4. I love veggie sandwiches! Mmm that cake looks tasty. πŸ™‚

  5. One of a my favorite veggie sandwiches includes: spinach, tomato, cucumber, red pepper, avocado, sprouts, munster cheese, and a little spread of cream cheese. it is so good!

  6. I’ve recently started making more sandwiches without meat.

  7. It’s so hard to choose! If I could only eat one for the rest of my life, it’d have to be a peanut butter sandwich just because I’m addicted to peanut butter. But I do enjoy a good veggie sandwich loaded with every veggie imaginable and topped with honey mustard dresing. Yum!

  8. Cheese. I love veggie sandwiches, but cheese is the top dog for me πŸ™‚

i hope you make the biscotti! let me know how you like it πŸ™‚

  10. That’s funny that your post is about ‘No meat sandwiches’. I’m a fairly conservative when I cook, and for the most part stick to recipes unless I’m cooking something completely made up and new. Recently I was feeling experimental – but am currently out of any lunch meat. I decided to add lettuce, Dijon, a few sliced olives/ or banana peppers (I’ve done both), and *chilled* canned green beans as the meat with a few squirts of ketchup and fresh ground pepped (key- can’t forget the pepper)…. I know, weird. I NEVER thought it would taste as good as it did. The green beans are AMAZING in sandwiches, and goes aaammaazing with the crunch of lettuce. Ever since, I’ve made them three or four times and still surprises me and keeps me wanting more. Try it- I dare you.

  11. Provolone cheese on any sandwich is delicious!

  12. Nut butter fo’ sho!!!

  13. I used to be the same way – unless it was a PB&J sandwich, it would be made with meat – usually turkey. You know what’s funny is that now I absolutely love veggie sandwiches! If I had to choose between all of the ones you listed, it would definitely be a veggie sandwich!

  14. Toss up between veggie and cheese. Scratch that combo of veggie and cheese. I’ve never been much of a lunch meat person and I prefer to eat my nut butters plain. Or with fluff. Ahhhh I love fluff.

  15. Veggie sandwiches all the way baby! Nutt butters come in second. πŸ™‚

  16. Growing up I had to have meat to call it a sandwich; I don’t think it was ever offered without it aside from grilled cheese and peanut butter. But I definitely like a good veggie sandwich with chesse of course!

  17. Ahh!!! Are you serious?! That just made my day! I’m so excited I feel like I should bake YOU some cookies lol
Thank you so much! Off to email you now =)

Also, I’d choose nut butter for sandwiches..naturally because I put peanut butter on everything!

  18. I have to pick just one? That’s nearly impossible. I guess it’d have to be nut butter!

  19. I love cheese on sandwiches, my new favourite is laughing cow light chesse with lettuce, cukes and tomatoes! So yummy : )

  20. Lol @ “App”. I love giving things nicknames, it adds so much fun!

I think I’ll have to say veggie sandwiches!

  21. I craved tomato and cheese sandwiches (with mustard!) during my entire pregnancy. I am a firm believer that sandwiches do not need meat to be good!

  22. Nut butter wins every time! I absolutely looove peanut butter and strawberry jam on wheat bread.

  23. I grew up thinking all sandwiches need meat, too … but I’ve been doing a lot more vegetarian meals since starting the CarbLovers diet.

I love a good cheese sandwich, though. One of my friends used to make grilled cheese with peanut butter. I tried it once, with a thin layer of PB β€” it was surprisingly tasty.

  24. why is cheese so darn good!!! i could live off goat, feta, chedder you name it!

  25. Veggie! Especially during the summer when they’re all so nice and fresh. πŸ™‚

  26. I don’t think I’ve met a sandwich I didn’t like. πŸ™‚

  27. Wow, that’s a hard question! I would have to say nut butter sandwiches are my choice. Especially when they are made with a banana and Justin’s Maple Almond Butter!

  28. This sandwich looks delish! Just my style. πŸ™‚

  29. Veggie! I love cheese, but only like it on sandwiches if the cheese:bread ratio is about 34398:1, so I usually leave cheese for nachos or crackers.

  30. I looove veggie sandwiches πŸ™‚ Especially when they’re all loaded up with goodness.

  31. i’d have to say meat. here’s why. growing up i didn’t like sandwiches. in HS i could tolerate pb&j or turkey. college i didn’t eat sandwiches. then for 2 yrs of working i ate pb&j nearly every day for lunch. now i am sick of that and hardly ever eat it. so meat it is! but i never really have tried a cheese and veggie sandwich so maybe i’ll have to now!

  32. Veggie!! ALL the way. Give me some Ezekiel bread, hummus, and a ton of veggies and I’ve got the yummiest, most filling combo πŸ™‚

…But salad dressing also makes an appearance every once in awhile πŸ™‚

  33. Veggies!

As a lactose-intolerant vegetarian, veggies are a big part of my sandwiches. Nut butter ones always taste awesome, but aren’t as filling.

  34. I love meatless sandwiches, give me some fresh veggies, hummus and cheese and I’m a happy girl…tomato paste also makes a great garnish
