Mini Oreo Cheesecakes

I have one heck of a delicious recipe to share with you, but first let me make 95 percent of you think I’m totally disgusting.

Guess what I had for lunch today?

Liverwurst.

Liverwurst

Also known as liver sausage, liverwurst common in Germany and is actually made with pork liver (as well as pepper, thyme, mustard seed and other spices).

Liverwurst is very pungent (even more so than tuna salad), so I made sure to eat my sandwich very quickly at work today so as not to receive nasty looks from all of my coworkers.

I first discovered liverwurst in elementary school when my friend Carrie used to enjoy liverwurst sandwiches at lunch. She would almost always let me have half of her sandwich, probably because I was the only other person crazy enough to think it tasted delicious. πŸ˜€

I haven’t have liverwurst in years and randomly felt inspired to purchase it at the grocery store this week to creep you guys out. πŸ˜€

I enjoyed my liverwurst on a whole wheat sandwich thin with a smear of light Miracle Whip.

Liverwurst Sandwich - EEEW! (But Really MMMM!)

I also included grape tomatoes and freshly sliced green pepper on the side.

Looks Like Christmas

A mini Oreo cheesecake also made its way into my mouth.

Lunchtime!

Mini Oreo Cheesecake

…Hold up! What? A mini Oreo cheesecake???

Good news! It is now time for the unveiling of last night’s mystery recipe:

Mini Oreo Cheesecakes

I have to thank the one and only Martha Stewart for this fantastic recipe. When I stumbled upon her recipe for mini Oreo cheesecakes on the blog Handle the Heat I knew I had to give it a go.

Milk's Favorite Cookie

Oh-So-Tasty

I love cheesecake, but find it really easy to overdo it when it comes to consuming the rich dessert. The mini size of these cheesecakes seemed like built-in portion control which really appealed to me.

After jotting down the recipe and making a pit-stop at the grocery store on my way home from work yesterday, I got crackin’.

I began by blending two pounds of Philadelphia cream cheese. I used four 8-ounce tubs and figured I could get away with using two regular and two 1/3 less fat because using the 1/3 less fat cream cheese makes this recipe instantly healthy. πŸ˜‰

Whirring Away

I then added a cup of sugar to the cream cheese and had this revelation: Cream cheese + sugar = Heaven for your taste buds.

I added the remaining ingredients (sour cream, salt, vanilla, eggs) before folding in chopped Oreo cookies.

Cookie Crumbs

Once the cream cheese filling was ready, I poured it into lined muffin tins on top of the whole Oreo cookie that was resting on the bottom of the tin.

Fill 'Er Up

After baking, cooling and chillin’ in the fridge overnight, these lil’ babies were ready for my belly.

Mini Oreo Cheesecakes

Eat Up!

Remember what I said before about how these little cheesecakes are basically built-in portion control? That was a lie. That only applies if you have the self control to only eat one… which I do not.

Cheesy, Sweet, Yummy

Just Trrrrrry To Resist Me

It's a Party in Your Mouth

One Last Bite...

So stinkin’ tasty!

Mini Oreo Cheesecakes (from Martha Stewart Cupcakes)

Makes 30 mini cheesecakes

Ingredients:

  • 42 cream-filled sandwich cookies, such as Oreos, 30 left whole, and 12 coarsely chopped
  • 2 pounds cream cheese, room temperature
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 4 large eggs, room temperature, lightly beaten
  • 1 cup sour cream
  • Pinch of salt

Directions:

1. Preheat oven to 275 degrees. Line standard muffin tins with paper liners. Place 1 whole cookie in the bottom of each lined cup.

2. With an electric mixer on medium high speed, beat cream cheese until smooth, scraping down sides of bowl as needed. Gradually add sugar, and beat until combined. Beat in vanilla.

3. Drizzle in eggs, a bit at a time, beating to combine and scraping down the sides of the bowl as needed. Beat in sour cream and salt. Stir in chopped cookies by hand.

4. Divide batter evenly among cookie-lined cups, filling each almost to the top. Bake, rotating pan halfway through, until filling is set, about 22 minutes. Transfer to wire racks to cool completely. Refrigerate at least 4 hours (or up to overnight). Remove from tins just before serving.

  1. julie, i love you. but i think the only way i can forgive you for that sandwich is if you make me 3 dozen oreo cheesecakes and overnight them to me immediately πŸ™‚

  2. Drool. That’s all I’ve got! Yum!!!

  3. Yum! Those look fantastic. I don’t think I would have the will power to resist from eating the entire batch..so those will stay away from my kitchen for now. Maybe some day. πŸ™‚

  4. Ummmm, WOW. That’s all I have to say (I’m drooling to much to talk!)

  5. this looks amazing! i totally have to make this ASAP! thanks for the delicious as ever recipes!

  6. OMG..I LOVE liverwurst and all of my roommates are always disgusted when I eat it…but hey, they are also grossed out when I eat cottage cheese so that doesn’t say much!

  7. Yup—officially grossed out πŸ˜‰ But I give you credit for being brave and not ashamed of your food!

  8. Wow. Those look amazing!!!

I am bookmarking this recipe fo sho!

  9. YUM!! The addition of the cookie at the bottom of the cupcake is genius!

  10. I’ve never had liverwurst, but I love liverwurst pate ( when I was in elementary school, my Mom used to make me liverwurst pate sandwiches for my lunch)

The oreo cheesecake looks amazing, holy yum! πŸ˜€

  11. That sandwich sounds awful, haha. Way to redeem yourself with these amazing mini cheesecakes. I must make them immediately. Or this weekend. One or the other!

  12. Wow oreo cheese cake. My little one would love this. It sounds really amazing.
    Thanks for sharing,
    Tes

  14. Are you kidding?! What were you thinking sharing this recipe, you should have made big bucks off of it πŸ˜‰ You bet I’ll be making those sometime soon!

  15. Those cheesecakes look delish!

  16. The oreo cheesecakes look so good! You think of the best recipes!

  17. I am so making those this weekend!

  18. Wow… I use to eat liverwurst as a little girl as well. Except my dad would feed it to me and I really didn’t know what it was made from. I just knew it tasted good! Then as I got older I realized what it was once I learned what most hot dogs are made from… Never tasted since and have no desire!

  19. I just bookmarked this page to definitely make at some point. My boyfriend is obsessed with cheesecake, I’m sure these don’t have a chance in our house!

  20. Well, I won’t say anything about the liverworst since I’ve never tried it. Unbeknownst to me, it could be something I would love πŸ™‚

Also, my mom makes something similar to those oreo cheesecakes (only with nilla wafers b/c I don’t like oreos) and they are so dang good! LOVE them!

  21. Those look great! And I’m not even an Oreo fan! I mihgt have to try them with a different cookie bottom and different mix-in. I wish Nutter Butters were circle shaped!

    • oooh i bet samoas (those girl scout cookies w/ the caramel, chocolate & coconut) would be fantastic!

  22. the sandwich… not so much my cup of tea. but those cheesecakes look divine!

  23. Simply delicious (the cupcakes, that is!) πŸ˜‰ YUMM!!

  24. Oh man! I have to try those!! My mouth is watering just looking at them (and I don’t even like oreo’s — except in ice cream) πŸ™‚

  25. the recipe looks delicious! i don’t think i would have the courage to try the liverwurst though…

  26. Yum! A couple of weeks ago I made Peanut Butter ‘n Banana Oreo Mini Cheesecakes (a mouthful – literally). http://atastelife.wordpress.com/2010/07/26/sweet-ending/
It’s a much smaller batch than your recipe – but I think you’d like this due to your love of PB!!!!

  27. I love all things oreo. You have NO idea how happy this made me. I’m going to make a batch and bring them with me to my last competition of the season and eat them as soon as I step off stage. YUM!!!

  28. My sister use to eat liverwurst ALL the time. I use to call it “pink squish”! I’ve never acutally tried it so I can’t knock it.

    Those cheesecakes look amazing!

  29. Good thing you didn’t title this post “liverwurst sandwich’ otherwise I would have never clicked it πŸ™‚ haha.

  30. I come from a German family, growing up we had German meats on Christmas morning! My grandmother makes the BEST german food you could ever have! I LOVE liverwurst, German meats are probably the one thing I’d break my no meat thing for just to have some!

  31. The oreo cheesecakes look soooo good. I adore cheesecake! I must try this recipe.

  32. I want to be disgusted with you and your ‘wurst sammy….but you totally redeem yourself with those cheesecakes! Yum-o!!!!!

  33. I am so glad that you posted the mini Oreo cheesecakes! I’ve made that recipe a few times myself (Martha’s cupcake cookbook rocks!) and always enjoy them. I’m willing to have an open mind on the sandwich… πŸ™‚

  34. OK you totally redeemed yourself with the cheesecakes. Because that sandwich–no offense–was really sick. πŸ™‚

  35. Liverwurst may be the BEST sandwich in the world. MMM, I could go for one right now.

    • HOORAY!!!! at least there is one other crazy person who loves liverwurst out there! πŸ™‚

  36. Glad you liked your meal because liverwurst and anything with cream cheese is yack-worthy in my book πŸ˜‰

  37. My mom,dad and my little bro all ate liverwurst when I was little. Me…not so much. πŸ™‚

    Now…those oreo cheesecakes….that’s more my style! πŸ™‚

  38. i’ve never tried liverwurst….i think the name itself scares me….yikes.

but those oreo cheesecake cupcakes on the other hand….YUM! i’ve got to try that!

  39. I liked Liverwurst as a kid (my mom fed it to me because it has lots of iron and I was anemic), but, after looking at the ingredients, I don’t think I can handle it now.

If you want a really tasty and mostly healthy “cheesecake” recipe that uses greek yogurt, let me know. It’s from a toddler cookbook and is so delish! I just made raspberry flavor last weekend with my kids.

  40. Oh this looks so yummy!! My husband is obsessed with oreos and I have never in my life said no to cream cheese, so this would be a winner in our house!

  41. These look so good!!!! And while the individual ones seem to say portion control, I agree with you that that isn’t really the case. My goodness, I would eat at least two!

  42. Is liverwurst anything like Braunschweiger? I have fond memories of eating braunschweiger smeared on soft white bread with a side of doritos when I visted my Grandma for our special weekends. Oh, the tastes of love… Delicious!

Speaking of love…oreo cheesecakes leave me speechless.

  43. oh lordy those looks good………

  44. I was throwing up in my mouth at the beginning of your post, but made a huge comeback with the oreo cheesecakes;)

  45. Holy moly, I need to make these! Going to be so dangerous when I do…

  46. Oh my goodness I must make those now!

  47. Oh my goodness– Oreos on the bottom as “crust” is GENIUS!! I want one right now, please.

I have absolutely NO sense of portion control, so I don’t think I could be trusted around those! Have you ever tried Oreo Truffles? They are similar-sounding in flavor (made with cream cheese + sugar) and then dipped in chocolate– they are to die for! But also, impossible to eat just one. πŸ˜‰

  48. YUM! Those cheesecakes look delicious!! Anything OREO is Ok by me!

My husband is German and LOVES liverwurst too….I have to gag when I make him a sandwich with it! People who like it seem to love it…and those that don’t can’t stand it!! More power to you for being able to like it:)

  49. I didn’t know that you could actually buy liverwurst actually…I thought it was some kind of old fashioned meat you had to go to a specialty store for! I’ll take your word on it’s deliciousness.

Mini Oreo cheesecakes….mmmm. Remind me of the Oreo truffle’s I’ve made before. They’re even more lethal because they’re smaller and therefore more poppable!!

  50. I’ve never tried liverwurst before, and while it doesn’t gross me out, I don’t know if I would love it. On the other hand, those Oreo cheesecakes look AMAZING!

  51. Mmmm! Anything with Oreo’s is instantly delicious to me! Have you tried the peanut butter ones? Oh my, those are dangerous around me.

  52. wow I love your oreo mini cheescakes!!! And I like liverwurst too… here in Austria we have vegetarian liverwurst and I like it on crisp bread with ketchup and pickles….mhhhhhh… and the non vegetarian kind i like too

  53. i used to eat liverwurst sandwiches as a kid all the time! they aren’t THAT pungent. i remember it being really salty but haven’t had it in years.

  54. O M G! Those Oreo cheesecakes look fantastic !! I would never be able to eat just one. maybe two?? =)

I was thoroughly disgusted by the liverwurst. But then again, I’m completely disgusted by all meat in general. The taste is awful, the texture is worse, EWWW! =P

  55. OMG! I saw those cheesecakes in a Martha Stewart cupcake cookbook. Every time I see it, I think I really should try the recipe. Glad to read a review of it. They sound amazing.

Now, I wonder if I have any cream cheese in the kitchen right now πŸ˜‰

  56. Mmm I’ve seen that recipe before but haven’t tried it, now I’m itching too! Don’t worry the portion control wouldn’t work for me either πŸ™‚

  57. amazing oreo cheesecake!!! So cute!!!
you have placemat at work? wooo!!! So neat!

  58. those look great!

  59. ohhahhh – OREOS melt my heart. Its been far too long! πŸ˜‰

  60. Mmmm looks delicious! And I’m NOT talking about the liverwurst. πŸ˜‰

  61. I love cheesecake but I don’t like oreo’s! Still.. they look tempting!!

I kinda wanna try liverwurst but I have to admit, the name isn’t appealing!

  62. As soon as I saw the title, you had my attention. Mini Oreo Cheesecakes – Yum! I HAVE to make them! πŸ™‚

  63. Calorie count per???? πŸ™‚

  64. I still don’t think I could get into the liverworst thing!! What does it taste like??

Those cheesecakes look deathly… Health food, right??

  65. YUM! I want to make those!!
